Important to know:
  • At the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year students will be issued mobile devices as directed by the teaching staff of each school.
  • At the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year the lab, classroom and laptop computers will be re-distributed to other schools in the division. 4 – 5 specialized high-powered machines may be retained as well a small, negotiated number of laptops or desktops to meet specific principal-designated purposes. e.g. Smartboard computes
  • Teachers will keep their division or school assigned laptops.

Take home task
Create something using an app that you have not used before. Eg. A short digital story in PhotoStory, an animation in Pivot, a series of graphs in the Logger Lite. Be prepared to share and discuss at our next meeting.

Learning Task
Questions to ponder and then to craft a respond. For our next meeting select one of the question sets below and create a response using a social media or technology tool that you have not used before. I have listed some suggestions for tools below please contact me if you want some help learning how to use one of them.
  1. What does my current pedagogy look like? What does it look like when I am teaching with technology? How might it look in my one-to-one classroom?
  2. What are my curriculum planning practices? How do they reflect the integration of learning technologies? How might they need to change to reflect learning and teaching with 1-to-1?
  3. What are my assessment practices? How do they reflect the integration of technology? How might they need to change to reflect learning and teaching with 1-to-1?
  4. What learning and teaching strategies to I currently use to support the development of higher-order thinking? How might they need to change to reflect learning and teaching with 1-to-1?
  5. What differentiation strategies do I currently use. How do they reflect the integration of technology? How might they need to change to reflect learning and teaching with 1-to-1?
  6. What existing learning and teaching resources do I have (right now!) which I use regularly and will readily support a 1-1 environment? What existing learning and resources am I aware of (but not using regularly) that can support a 1-to-1 environment?
  7. What processes for permissions and protocols for intellectual property including copyright, and safe and responsible use of the internet are in place and followed across the school? How might these be updated to reflect 1-to-1 learning?
  8. How can we keep students and parents informed of new processes
  9. What do/can I do to support students to connect, collaborate or create beyond the walls of the classroom and the school?

At the heart of the Living Sky School Division's one-to-one program are two core principles:
  1. Ubiquitous access to digital learning tools creates a 21st Century learning environment that engages and stimulates sutdents
  2. Ubiquitous access to digital learning tools creates changes in teaching and learning that leads to increased student achievement and strengthens skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving.

  • Read the following article, pull out key words and phrases - what resonates with you. No Laptop for You Until You Set Goals
  • In your small group - come to a consensus about 5 key terms/ideas/concepts that you believe articulates why UPS students would benefit from a one-to-one program.
  • As a large group come a consensus about 5 key ideas and form them into a statement.

UPS envisions a one-to-one computing program that will increase student engagement thus promoting higher order thinking skills, enhancing an inquiry-based approached to learning, and facilitating reflection.
The one-to-one program will enable teachers to utilize a differentiated approach to learning thereby recognizing the unique learning needs of each student.
The one-to-one program will allow increased communication between students, parents, and teachers.
